WHAT EVERY WOMAN NEEDS
Cheap ugliness is bad enough, but costly ugliness is a crime.

Hope you ran out and acquired whatever you were missing from Scenario #1 – DAYTIME and Scenario #2 – DRESSY DINNER. Yes? If you did, then you are finding you have the appropriate things to wear for day or evening. But an invitation to a black tie dinner or a fancy ball is going to require some thought. Firstly, black tie dinners at home are generally considered less dressy than those held in, for instance, the marbled courtyard of your local country club or the penthouse ballroom of a hotel. An invitation to any grand marble ballroom, Cotillion ball, Mardi Gras ball or wedding scheduled at 6PM or later means you will be wearing at least ¾ length (my favorite) or longer dress. Obviously, an invitation to a “ball” requires a ball gown. Normally, an invitation to a black tie dinner at home leaves you the option of a long or short dress (usually short) unless advised otherwise by your hostess. The “normally” is because you might have at least one friend who has a very elegant, spacious and possibly marble room for entertaining at home and one can assume that the hostess of that grand house would expect you to be fully “decked out” for her parties. So you must consider the venue and dress accordingly unless advised otherwise by your hostess. It is worth mentioning that you can only compliment your hostess by “over-dressing’ and you do the opposite by…..well, you get the point. Keeping it simple, the most important place to spend your hard-earned dollars for this and future black tie evenings is on an impressive necklace and/ or bracelet or a demi-parure, if you can find one. Reminder: Get this right; buy grown-up
forever items. “Out-growing” jewelry is a very expensive habit so
there will be no upgrading!!!
Necklace or Demi-Parure –
The Mogul-style
Indian demi-parure pictured below is made in the same fashion as
the Mogul jewelry has been made for hundreds of years. The rose
cut diamonds are foil-backed in a closed mounting. To provide
sense of scale - the earrings pictured are 3.5” long. Big and
impressive, these pieces have the added benefit of being much more
reasonable to acquire than a European design of the same scale.
How reasonable?
$48,000. But if you cannot carry off this large scale or cannot
manage this purchase at the moment, then stick to your strand
of white pearls and a pair of diamond hoops, diamond studs or
other dressy earrings that have at least some diamonds. Now aren’t you glad you got those indispensable
basics? “White" Bracelets - If
the bracelet(s) you acquire for this party are your first really
dressy purchase for your arm, then stick to basic “white” diamonds.
Avoiding color means the piece is more versatile and you will
be able to wear the bracelet(s) with many more things. The
diamond pave link bracelet below is over 1” wide and has more
than 63cts of diamonds. If you can afford a pair of these
beauties, when not on your arm, they can be connected to form
a seriously impressive necklace. The pair of bangles on
the right below is made in the Mogul-style and would be fabulous
with the demi-parure above. This pair of bangles is $8,300
![]() Colorful Bracelets - If
you already have your versatile “white” bracelets and you want
to add some pieces to your collection, getting “period” jewelry
is a great investment. As antique dealers love to say, “They
ain’t making any more of these!” Rarity always adds value.
As when an artist dies his paintings are immediately more valuable,
the same is true with period jewelry. They aren’t making any more
and it is very collectible. The two bracelets below are of “Art
Deco” design. The difference is that one was made in the
Art Deco period and the other is a contemporary bracelet made
in the Art Deco-Style. One is wildly more expensive than the other.
Both make a big statement and are terrific bracelets but can you
tell which is “of the period”?
![]() Earrings -
If you own one of these fantastic pieces above, put on a pair
of smashing diamond earrings and you are ready to party. (If
you have to wear your strand of pearls again, so be it,
but if you are wearing them this much you need a matching strand
to keep them company!)

above by way of example are in the shop at present but an interesting
