Valentines Newsletter
February 2, 2010

February marks the end of winter and after so much rain we are ever hopeful of a little more sunshine in our days soon. It is also Cupid's Month, which usually brings to mind romantic dinners, flowers, chocolate, and Hallmark cards. Globally, nearly a billion cards are given on and around February 14th to honor the celebration of love and romance. That makes it the second most popular card giving/sending day of the year? Christmas being the first.

I recently read an article of advice to men on the right and wrong ways to express undying love on Valentine's Day. Unfortunately, there are no set rules, no guidelines to be followed. But there are some pitfalls to avoid at all cost and all of us can relate to this list - no matter your sex.

Basic "No-No's" include (incomplete list) -

Never give household appliances or products. No irons or ironing boards, none of the fanciest new products to polish silver, "no" on updating the vacuum or newfangled low-energy light bulbs, and no Sham-Wows.

Never give any beauty products or services whose objective is to get one fit or make one appear younger. No creams, lotions, potions, gym memberships, Botox or Fraxel laser treatments. Believe me, there is a moderate to high risk of this gift being taken the wrong way. No matter how expensive it is - steer clear.

No pets of any kind, no matter how cute. This could turn out great or very, very wrong.

Also steer clear of lingerie that includes in its design any black leather or metal studs. Any undergarment that resembles the Gaultier pointy "cone-bra" number designed for Madonna's Blond Ambition Tour will - with a few exceptions - not go over well.

On a more positive note, Valentine's Day does not have to "happen to you" if you avoid last minute planning. So get started early!! Create an evening or a day that you and your sweetie can enjoy together and tailor it to your personalities, with heavy emphasis on HER personal likes. Rely on the old standbys if you must; you just can't go wrong with jewelry, chocolate, perfume or flowers. (My personal favorites are something from Meriwether, See's, Joy and orchids - in that order.) Romance and surprise are the operative words here. And just because she says she doesn't expect either, every female adores a man who expresses his devotion in a creatively romantic and thoughtful way. Surprise her!!

Maybe this pair of earrings in pink opal and amethyst, the color of passion, will be just the thing. If not, wander around the Meriwether website or come into the shop for other ideas.
