Mario Buccellati was born into a family of renowned jewelers that began with Contardo Buccellati in the 18th century. Starting in 1903, he was an apprentice goldsmith in Milano, Italy. He later pioneered the jewelry technique known as "texture engraving" which has made Buccellati’s jewelry distinctive and recognizable for the last 75 years. Mario Buccellatti died in 1965 but the firm is still managed by the Buccellati family. Mario Buccellati’s fourth son, Gianmaria Buccellati, maintains the company’s atelier, and working together with his brother Luca, who maintains the operation in New York, he has expanded the company globally.
